जातकर्म संस्कार शिशु के जन्म के तुरंत बाद संपन्न किया जाता है। यह संस्कार नवजात शिशु का स्वागत करने, आत्मा को शुद्ध करने और बच्चे को ज्ञान, शक्ति एवं दीर्घायु का आशीर्वाद देने के लिए किया जाता है। पिता इस अनुष्ठान को संपन्न करते हैं, जिसमें शिशु के कान में वैदिक मंत्रों का उच्चारण किया जाता है और उसे मधु (शहद) व घी का पवित्र अर्पण कराया जाता है। गृह्य सूत्र, मनुस्मृति और गर्भ उपनिषद में इस संस्कार को बच्चे के आध्यात्मिक और बौद्धिक विकास के लिए अनिवार्य बताया गया है। इस विधि में मंत्रोच्चार, देवी-देवताओं की प्रार्थना और नवजात के लिए दिव्य सुरक्षा एवं आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने के अनुष्ठान शामिल होते हैं।
